Richard Smith

Hello, My Name Is...

<Richard Smith>

My name is Richard Smith. I was born in Massachusetts but moved to my mom’s native Texas as a teenager. I graduated from Harlingen High School and received my Bachelor of Arts from Stephen F. Austin State University with a double major in Communications and History and a minor in Geography. I have done a variety of things throughout my working life, ranging from television production and programming to working with the homeless here in Nacogdoches to medical insurance billing. However, the most fulfilling and rewarding career I’ve ever had is being an educator. Being married to my awesome wife, Joyce, who has been an educator all of her adult life, I grew to realize that teaching is what I really wanted to do, so I made a major life and career change. I taught middle school social studies in Killeen ISD for four years, and now I’m proud to be teaching U.S. History at Nacogdoches High School. As far back as I can remember, I’ve had a great love of history, and I hope to share that with my students. I want them to learn how important it is to know where we’ve come from as a nation, how we got to this point in time, and how our past influences our future. After a lengthy time away, I’m excited to be back in Nac!
