Students Advance to Area Choir CompetitionFour Nacogdoches High School choir members qualified this month for the area competition in the Texas Music Educators Association.

Seniors William Murphy and Nate Gailley and juniors Andrew Simon and Josh Barnes will participate Jan. 13 in the area competition (the site has yet to be determined).

The four NHS students are part of the men’s chorale that will perform together at the choir’s Christmas concert in the school’s auditorium at 7 p.m. Dec. 19.

At the competition held Nov. 16 in Hallsville, students learned four pieces of music ahead of time and were judged on three of those pieces, which they sang individually. They were also required to sight read a piece of music, NHS choral director Ryan Smith said.

For William, Nate, Andrew and Josh, choir and music has been a part of their lives at school.

William is new to NHS this year, moving here from Moscow, Idaho, but he was involved previously in choir. Josh has been in choir since sixth-grade, he said, and Andrew also plays with the Marching Dragon band. Nate, as well, has been involved with choir since his freshman year.
