NHS junior headed to tech forumNicolas Upshaw has a lot of interests… videography, computer science and engineering, just to name a few. And next summer, the Nacogdoches High School junior will get to expand his knowledge in those areas with a trip to a technology forum in Georgia.

Nicolas will participate in a National Youth Leadership Forum for Engineering & Technology on the campus of Georgia Tech University in Atlanta. Selected to attend the program based on a strong academic record and interest in engineering, Nicolas will be at the forum July 20-27.

“I just hope to learn a lot and grow and get some valuable experience,” Nicolas said.

After graduation from NHS in 2020, Nicolas is interested in attending Rice University, University of Texas, University of Houston or Sam Houston State. He’s got a visit planned soon to tour Rice.

Nicolas is interested in computer science and computer engineering; he’s also fascinated with video work.

“I just love technology,” said Nicolas, who operates a camera with a team of students producing images for the video board at Dragon Stadium.

During games, Nicolas carries a mobile camera to obtain footage of groups in the stadium, such as drillteam or cheerleaders. The video collected can then be used on the video board, he said.

Nicolas is an honor student at NHS and a 2017 recipient of the Academic Excellence Award and will soon be inducted into the Nacogdoches Chapter of Top Teens.

He serves his school and community as a tutor to after-school students in the Solid Foundation Association and sits on the Career and Technology Advisory Council.

“Nick is a great student and student leader,” said NHS Principal Dr. Rom Crespo. “We are very proud of Nick and all that he has accomplished and know he will do great things in the future.”

Nicolas is also a member of the NHS Principal’s Student Leadership Council and has served his church by working in the sound tech booth.

Nicolas has been awarded a scholarship of $750, which will cover a portion of the cost of attending the forum. A GoFundMe account (Making a dream a reality) has been set up to benefit Nicolas and his trip to Atlanta.
